At a glance
Tavily is an agent-search platform with synthesized answers, chunked LLM-ready output, a security layer (PII detection, prompt-injection protection), and even a keyless trial. Search1API returns live results from 17 real search engines — including six Chinese engines Tavily does not offer — with crawling bundled in. On budget, the gap is large: Tavily’s entry plan costs $30/month for about 4,000 basic searches, while $5 buys 5,000 here; at roughly $500/month, Tavily delivers 100,000 searches to our one million. Choose Tavily if you want answer synthesis and safety filtering out of the box; choose Search1API for raw SERP coverage, Chinese web access, and volume per dollar.

Search1API vs Tavily, category by category
Tables hide trade-offs, so here is what each difference actually means in practice.
How results are produced
Live SERPs from 17 real engines. What your agent sees matches what a person would find searching Google, Bing, Reddit, X — or WeChat, Bilibili, and Baidu — directly. Batching is native: pass arrays to /search, /news, and /crawl and failed items are not billed.
Tavily runs its own index layered on partner sources, then adds answer synthesis and auto-parameters that infer filters from the query. The experience is opinionated and fast; coverage tracks their pipeline, not any public engine.
For verifiable SERP ground truth — especially across Chinese platforms — Search1API goes direct. For quick summarized answers with minimal plumbing, Tavily does more of the work for you.
Content fetching
/crawl for any URL, /deepcrawl for whole sites with status polling, /sitemap, /screenshot as a first-class endpoint (12 parameters), and /extract for schema-shaped output — all at flat credit pricing.
/extract fetches single pages, /crawl accepts natural-language instructions, and /map enumerates site structure. Their crawl is genuinely convenient; it just does not include screenshots or dedicated deep-crawl job management at our flat credit cost.
Both crawl; Search1API ships the wider fetch surface (screenshots, sitemaps, whole-site jobs) and charges flat credits instead of monthly quota.
Where Tavily is genuinely ahead
We say this plainly because evaluators will check: Tavily synthesizes answers in the search call, controls chunk size per source, infers parameters from natural language, can drive crawls with plain-English instructions, ships a security layer (PII interception, prompt-injection defense, malicious-source filtering), offers a keyless trial, and has a dedicated /research endpoint. It also publishes third-party benchmark scores.
These are real capabilities we do not currently match.
If your product depends on built-in answers or safety filtering, Tavily earns its premium. If your own stack already handles reasoning and safety over raw results, you are paying twice with Tavily.
Agent integration
Hosted MCP server over Streamable HTTP with OAuth 2.1 (PKCE + dynamic client registration), the s1 CLI with OAuth login, official Agent Skills, and TypeScript/Python SDKs.
A hosted MCP server, multi-language SDKs, and a CLI of their own — parity territory. Tavily additionally allows keyless trial access.
Transport is not the differentiator here; what matters is engine breadth behind the endpoint and price per search.
Pricing compared at the same tier
Vendors return different payloads per request (Tavily synthesizes answers and chunks; we return SERP results plus optional raw content). What can be compared apples-to-apples is price per request volume:
| Search1API | Tavily | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | 100 credits, no card required, never expire | 1,000 credits/month, reset monthly |
| Cheapest paid step | $5 top-up → 5,000 searches ($1.00 per 1,000) | $30/month Project plan → 4,000 basic searches ($7.50 per 1,000) |
| Entry subscription tier | $19/month → ~19,000 searches | $30/month → 4,000 basic searches |
| ~$500/month tier | $499 Enterprise → 1,000,000 searches ($0.50 per 1,000) | $500 Growth → 100,000 basic searches ($5.00 per 1,000) |
| Credit expiry | Never | Monthly reset — unused plan credits do not roll over |
Figures use each vendor’s published rates as of August 26, 2026. Tavily prices advanced-depth searches higher than basic, so heavy advanced usage widens this gap further.
Who should choose which
Choose Tavily if you need
Answers synthesized inside the search response (include_answer) rather than by your own model
A security layer out of the box: PII detection, prompt-injection protection, malicious-source filtering
Natural-language control of crawls and maps, and auto-parameter inference from prompts
Trying the API without creating keys — their keyless mode removes signup friction
Choose Search1API if you need
Real SERP results from 17 engines your users can verify — not a private index
Chinese web access: WeChat, Bilibili, Baidu, Sogou, 360, Quark
An order of magnitude more searches at the ~$500/month tier (1M vs 100k)
Credits that never expire, from a $5 entry point with auto-recharge
Switching from Tavily to Search1API
You gain engine choice and lose built-in synthesis — if your app has its own LLM step anyway, little else changes:
| Tavily | Search1API | |
|---|---|---|
| POST api.tavily.com/search | include_domains/exclude_domains map to include_sites/exclude_sites; include_answer/chunks_per_source have no equivalent — synthesize in your own model | POST api.search1api.com/search (query, search_service, max_results ≤50) |
| /extract (single URL) | Clean text both ways | POST /crawl with the same url |
| /crawl (site traversal) | Their version takes natural-language instructions; ours takes url + type only today | POST /deepcrawl + GET /deepcrawl/status/{taskId} |
| /map | Direct equivalent for enumerating site URLs | POST /sitemap |
| Keyless trial, security layer, /research | Genuinely unmatched by us right now | No equivalent today |
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Tavily?
If your complaint is cost or index transparency, Search1API is the closest structural replacement: real multi-engine SERPs with crawling included, entry pricing around $1 per 1,000 searches versus Tavily’s $7.50, and ten times the volume at the $500/month tier. If you rely on built-in answer synthesis or the security layer, Tavily still covers those better than anyone on this page.
Why is Tavily more expensive per search?
Because each response carries more finished work: synthesized answers, tuned chunks, safety filtering. That is valuable when you have no model pipeline of your own — but if you already run an LLM step over raw results, you are paying twice. Our responses are raw SERP data plus optional page content, which keeps unit price low.
Does Search1API support answer synthesis like include_answer?
No. We deliberately return structured SERP results and optional page content and let your model do the reasoning. Token-wise that costs more than pre-chunked answers — it is an honest trade-off against a much lower price per search and broader engine coverage.
Can I migrate gradually?
Yes. Start with 100 free credits, mirror your highest-traffic Tavily queries through /search and /crawl, compare result quality yourself, then switch traffic endpoint by endpoint. Credits never expire, so leftover balance is never wasted.
What happens to unused Tavily credits compared with yours?
Tavily resets plan credits monthly — unused volume evaporates. Purchased Search1API credits never expire, so bursty workloads do not pay for capacity they did not use.
