Official plugin · ChatGPT & Codex

Search the live web in ChatGPT & Codex

Use the same official Search1API plugin in ChatGPT and Codex. Find current sources for a conversation or a coding task, read the pages behind them, and browse interactive source cards in supported clients. Powered by MCP.

Research from your conversation

Find current sources

Search the web and news, explore trending topics, or describe a research question to find relevant sources.

Read beyond the snippet

Read a public page or follow a search result to check the details before drawing a conclusion.

Browse sources with MCP UI

In supported clients, render_results displays selected sources as cards. It uses results already retrieved, without another search or additional search credits. Other clients receive a readable text list.

One plugin for ChatGPT and Codex

ChatGPT and Codex share a plugin directory. Start with the official listing; manual MCP setup is an alternative, not a prerequisite.

Search1API official plugin

Bring live web sources into your work.

Search the web and news, read pages, discover site links, follow trends, research with ask, and display sources with render_results.

For supported ChatGPT and Codex environments. Interactive cards require a client with MCP UI support; other clients receive a readable text list.

Open the official listing, install the plugin, and authorize your Search1API account when prompted. Start a new chat and ask ChatGPT or Codex to use Search1API.

Try it in your next conversation

Find recent coverage of a topic and compare the sources.

Ask Codex to check a dependency upgrade against its latest changelog, issue reports, and API documentation.

Collect relevant sources, then ask to see them as cards.

Optional: connect Codex CLI through MCP

Prefer a direct MCP connection? Add the hosted endpoint, then sign in with OAuth. The third block is an API key alternative to OAuth, not an additional step. No local MCP server is needed.

Add the MCP server — bash
codex mcp add search1api --url https://mcp.search1api.com/mcp
Sign in with OAuth — bash
codex mcp login search1api
Alternative: API key — text
# ~/.codex/config.toml — API key instead of OAuth:
[mcp_servers.search1api]
url = "https://mcp.search1api.com/mcp"
http_headers = { "Authorization" = "Bearer YOUR_SEARCH1API_KEY" }

Configuration and account

codex mcp add writes the server entry to ~/.codex/config.toml. Check the connection with codex mcp list or /mcp in Codex CLI.

For API key authentication, create a key in the Search1API dashboard and replace YOUR_SEARCH1API_KEY in the alternative configuration.

The plugin and direct MCP connection use your Search1API account credits at the same rates.

FAQ

Can I use the same plugin in ChatGPT and Codex?

Yes. ChatGPT and Codex share the official plugin listing. Search1API connects through MCP. Install and authorize the plugin in a supported environment, or use the optional direct MCP configuration for Codex CLI.

Does displaying source cards run another search?

No. The render_results tool presents sources already retrieved. Rendering does not consume search credits. Clients without MCP UI support receive a readable text list.

Which account pays for tool calls?

Tool calls use your connected Search1API account credits. New accounts receive 100 free credits. The plugin uses the same Search1API rates as other integrations.
